Autumn Term 2020 (1st half)
Knock! Knock! Who’s behind the door?
A mystery object behind a door was the stunning start to our topic; each week there was something or someone new to discover behind the door. The children found out about the adults and other children in their bubble when they showed and talked about the items in their Special Boxes.
The children listened to stories such as: The Gruffalo, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Elmer and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? They learned to alliterate and rhyme and recognise letter sounds. They used play dough and tools such as scissors and tweezers to strengthen the muscles in their fingers. The children practised writing their names using a cursive style.
The children sorted, matched and compared sets of objects. The children compared and ordered objects using language such as big/small, short/long and short/tall. They recognised and created simple patterns using objects.
Going to the computer suite for the first time was very exciting. The children developed their mouse skills and over several sessions, created their face, patterns from left to right and a colourful owl.
The children have enjoyed playing in The Fruit Shop, The Theatre and The Home Office; there have been lots of different activities to try during exploring time.
Listening to the story Funny Bones, learning to name parts of the body and sorting faces according to hair or eye colour was fun. As a fabulous finish the children listened to the story of The Gingerbread Man and then decorated and ate their own gingerbread man.
Autumn Term 2020 (2nd half)
A colourful, virtual firework experience will be a stunning start to our topic. The children will be learning about Guy Fawkes Night and Diwali and will make firework pictures using a computer program. They will listen to the story of Rama and Sita and make clay Diva lamps and colourful rangoli patterns.
The children will learn to say and write letter sounds and segment and blend them in words. They will write their names, labels and captions. The Castle, Post Office and Toy Shop will be fun places to play.
The children will learn to represent and compare numbers to 5 and learn about their composition. They will find out about shapes with 1, 3 and 4 sides. The children will explore 1 more/1 less and challenge themselves to explore 2 more/2 less or even 3 more/3 less. They will describe when events happen and measure time.
In P.E., the children will follow Body Management activities. In dance, they will perform a firework dance and an autumn dance.
Learning about artwork by environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy and going on an autumn walk in the school grounds to collect leaves means that the children can create their own art works in groups.
The children will learn the Christmas story and celebrate Christmas by making decorations and cards. As a fabulous finish, the children will dress up and perform the nativity story.
