National Geographical Fieldwork Week - June 6th - 10th 2022

Throughout the week 6th - 0th June, we took part in 'National Fieldwork Week.'  This is a national event that encourages schools across the country to get outside and take part in some Geography fieldwork.  The theme of this year's event was 'CHANGE@ and so we planned our fieldwork around this idea.  What changes over time at school?  What changes over time in our local area?  Each year group took part in their own fieldwork activities, taking their learning outside the classroom.  The children loved the opportunity to be real Geography explorers!

In Foundation Stage, the children drew simple maps of the playground, showing different routes that visitors to the school would take.

In Year 1, the children took part in a local walk around Ampthill, exploring the landmarks that they spotted around the town.

In Year 2, the children practised their map reading skills by using a map of the school grounds to explore and record the human and physical features they found around school.

In Year 3,  the children carried out their fieldwork virtually, and really enjoyed looking back at photographs of Ampthill from the 1950s and using Google Earth to look at Ampthill now.  They talked in great depth about how and why Ampthill has changed and created their own sketch maps to show the changes.  Finally, they thought about the changes they would like to see happen in Ampthill in the future!

In Year 4, the children investigated the statement, 'The British weather is changeable'.  Each day for a week, they recorded the weather in the morning and afternoon to see if and how the weather was variable throughout the week.
