Autumn 2020

Stone Age

We began our year reading the story ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’. We used this text to help us write our own set of instructions on how to wash a woolly mammoth! As well as this we learnt lots of facts about Skara Brae and wrote our own non-chronological reports. This half term we will be reading the story ‘Stone Age Boy’. We will use this text to write a diary entry in the role of Stone Age Boy, a setting description and our very own narratives.

In Maths, we started off the year by looking at place value and the many ways we can represent numbers. We then built our knowledge of this into addition and subtraction. To begin addition and subtraction we made sure we knew our number bonds to 10 and began using counters to find answers to calculations. After this we looked at using a more formal written method for these calculations which is column addition/subtraction. We then used this to work out 3-digit by 3-digit addition and subtraction calculations.

We are now going to be exploring the topic of multiplication and division. We will begin by going over things we might have missed in Year 2 and then will use this to understand new calculation processes. Before Christmas we will have looked at: grouping objects (using physical resources), using the multiplication symbol, 2 times table, 5 times table, dividing by 10, 3 times table, 4 times table and 8 times table. As well as doing all of this we will continue to practice Times Tables Rockstars daily - which Year 3 are getting really good at!

In Science we have been learning all about rocks. Did you know there are three main rock groups? Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary. We enjoyed being Scientists, investigating which rock type was the most durable and using Starburst sweets to create each of these rock types. This term we are moving onto learning about soils and fossils too!

In Geography, we have really enjoyed learning about volcanoes. We found out what volcanoes were, where they are in the world and why and how they erupt. We have enjoyed watching many volcanic eruptions from all the lovely volcano models you have been busily making at home – thank you. We will soon be finding out about earthquakes!

In History, we are learning about the Stone Age. We have already found out about homes and tools used across the Stone Age and will be continuing learning about the Stone Age this term. Linked to out Stone Age theme, we created our own pop up books in our DT learning.

Next term, we are going to start painting in our Art lessons with a focus on creating backgrounds for different purposes as well as using shape, pattern and line. Additionally, we will be continuing to learn how to play the Glockenspiel in our Music lessons and learning about different religions in RE.
