Autumn 2023
Year three have made a flying start to their maths learning this year. The children were introduced to times tables Rock Stars and had great fun practicing their mental recall daily and challenging themselves to reach new levels.
This term we have been developing our knowledge of place value. We explored numbers up to 1000 and found out how we can represent them using a place value grid. We learned to count in 100’s and 50’s up to 1000 and also began to estimate where numbers belong on a number line.
Towards the end of the half term we began to learn how to add and subtract numbers. We worked hard to discuss different strategies and learned lots by discussing varied approaches with our peers. Next term we will continue to build on these skills, working towards using more formal written methods to calculate addition and subtraction. We will also continue to use TTRS daily to aid our rapid recall of multiplication.
In Science, we have been learning all about rocks. Did you know there are three main rock groups? Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary. We enjoyed being Scientists, investigating which rock type was the most durable and using Starburst sweets to create each of these rock types. We also learnt how soils and fossils are made. We will now move onto learning all about Animals including Humans.
This term in PE, we have been learning about football. We have learnt how to pass and trap the ball with developing control and in game situations we have started developed our understanding of the importance of space and accuracy when passing. We will continue our learning in PE and will move onto our OAA and Gymnastic units this half term. Learning how to make different shapes, use explosive movements and perfect a range of rolls.
In D.T, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about what a bridge is and its purpose. The children explored and learnt about different bridge designs before designing and making their own- meeting specific design requirements! We will now move onto Art and we will be taking inspiration from, Henry Moore.
The children have thoroughly enjoyed our Anglo- Saxons theme this half term and linking their learning to all areas of the curriculum. The children have learnt about why the Anglo- Saxons came to Britain and where they settled. Along with key aspects of Anglo- Saxon village life such as: homes, food, clothes art. The children enjoyed a fantastic Anglo- Saxon Day earlier in the term- bring their learning to life!
In English, we have had great fun reading ‘Anglo- Saxon boy’ and ‘How to be an Anglo-Saxon’. We were able to link this to our writing and create a super set of instructions of our own on how to live like an Anglo-Saxon. We also developed our understanding of what we read by: predicting what might happen from details stated and implied, drawing inferences and justifying inferences with evidence and identifying how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning. Next term we will be studying poetry and look in detail at Haikus
