Spring 2024 2nd  half

Paws, Claws and Whiskers!

Our Spring Term got off to a ‘Stunning Start’ with a visit from Herrings Farm! We met lots of different animals including a tortoise, skunk and a cockroach! We learnt so much about these animals, from their special features to their various diets and we were even allowed to gently touch or stroke them. We asked the expert some brilliant questions which set us up for our Paws, Claws and Whiskers topic!

During our Science lessons we had great fun learning about six different animal groups: fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects. We now know how to identify, name and sort a huge variety of animals into groups based on their features, habitats and diets.

In English, we used non-fiction texts to learn about ‘looking after pets’ and then researched lots of facts about them, creating our own class books!

In Maths, we will have been learning to count confidently up to 50 and know what the numbers mean, e.g. how many tens and ones are in a two-digit number? We have also be learning to recognise and describe the properties of 2 and 3 D shapes.

Our Art lessons were extremely fun, as we learnt to use pencil, pastel and printing techniques to create repeating animal patterns and designs.

In Geography, we have been learning about the 7 Continents and 5 Oceans. Have you heard our catchy songs that help us remember their names? We then used our knowledge to build our own world on a blue paper plate by cutting out the continent shapes, naming them and locating them using an atlas to help us.

Coming up in our History lessons, we will be finding out about famous Queens, such as Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.  We will learn what Tudor life was like during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, how Queen Victoria lived and changed Britain for a better life and then explore the life of Queen Elizabeth II and ways in which she celebrated her many jubilees.

In Design Technology, we will be learning how to use simple levers, pivots and wheels to make a moving mechanism for our own mini-beast picture. We will be practising skills in cutting, folding, fixing and joining.

We will also be enjoying our Computing sessions where we will learn how to group data by exploring object labels and using these to sort groups of objects by their properties.

To finish the term on a high, our ‘Fantastic Finish’ will take us to Woburn Safari Park where we will have a guided coach tour around the larger animal enclosures, a walk around the foot safari and then on to an indoor educational workshop where we will learn all there is to know about animal poo!!

Our teachers cannot wait!

Thank you for your ongoing support.
