Spring 2023 1st half

The Powers of you and Me!

In Year One we have continued to have a ‘super’ year!

Last half term we have enjoyed reading and listening to more stories about different super heroes. From Superkid to Superworm  and we have role played how to ‘save the day!’.  We learnt how to retell the stories in our own words, using key vocabulary from the text.  In DT, we have investigated the best way to join materials and to print on fabric before designing and making our own Christmas tree decorations.

We were very lucky to have an amazing trip to the Toy Museum and Castle at the start of this half term.  We saw thousands of toys from the past which helped us to understand the types of toys our parents and grandparents used to play with.  Remember the photos from the trip are on the website!

This half term in Maths we have been developing our skills and knowledge for addition and subtraction including learning our number bonds to 10 and other number facts within 20.  This included counting on and back using a number line and how to use the part whole model.

In Science and Geography, we looked at the four seasons and the weather patterns associated with them, and went on an Autumn and Winter walk around the school.

In RE, we have continued to learn about Christianity and we learnt more about the Christmas Story and why it is important to Christians.

We had lots of fun during our Christmas Jumper Day activities and loved our Santa dash around the school playground.

In the next half term our theme is Paws, Claws and Whiskers.   We will be learning about lots of different animals, via the use of non-fiction texts. We hope to have a visitor from Herrings Green Farm, in order to teach the children further how we care for animals.

In Maths, we will be learning to count confidently up to 50 and know what the numbers mean, e.g. how many tens and ones are in a two-digit number.  We will also be learning to recognise and describe the properties of 2 and 3 D shapes.

In Science, we will be learning about animal groups and their diets and hope to carry out a rainfall investigation – weather dependent!

In Geography we will learn about the 4 countries of the United Kingdom and their capital cities and also the seven continents and 5 oceans of the world.

Finally in Art, we will be studying the artist Henri Rousseau and recreating animal skin patterns through drawing and printing.

We are looking forward to a fun filled spring term in Year One!

Thank you for your ongoing support.
