Summer 2022 2nd half

Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!

Year 1 have really enjoyed our topic so far this term ‘Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!’

During English we read the Rainbow Fish and acted out the story in small groups. We looked for adjectives to describe Rainbow Fish and sequenced the story using pictures and writing our own sentences. We enjoyed reading the story of ‘Tiddler the story telling fish!’ We predicted what might happen to him in the story and wrote a character description about him, looking closely at his appearance and personality. Finally we shared the story of ‘Granddad’s Island’ and we talked about our own Granddad’s or people who are special to us and wrote about why they are special. We ‘hot seated’ Grandad and asked him some interesting questions.

In Maths we have been learning about measures. We looked at how to compare the weight and mass of a range of objects and how to measure them using non-standard units. We had fun learning about capacity and filling a range of containers with water and then describing the volume of each container. We used our skills of 2s, 5s and 10s to help us learn about multiplication. We used repeated addition and arrays to work out ‘lots of’ e.g. 5 lots of 2 =10. Finally we learnt about fractions by finding halves and quarters of a range of objects, shapes and numbers.

In Geography, we learnt about our local area and landmarks.  We then planned a route to walk around Ampthill to observe these landmarks. We even managed to have lunch in the park whilst dodging the rain!

In Art, we learnt all about the artist Archimboldo.  We looked at his paintings and how he used seasonal fruit and vegetables in his work.  We then made our own fruit and vegetable sculptures.

In History we are learning about seaside experiences in the past compared with the present, using secondary sources and timelines.  We enjoyed role playing being at the seaside over 100 years ago!

For the rest of our term we are looking forward to rehearsing and performing our end of year play and meeting our new teachers in readiness for moving to Year Two!

We are looking forward to the fabulous few weeks left with yourselves and your children.
