Summer 2022 1st half

Paws, Claws and Whiskers!

We have continued to have a very busy time in Year 1!

In English, we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite book characters.  We enjoyed listening to lots of different stories as well as doing lots of fun activities based on the book, ‘The Queen’s Hat.’  We also read and performed a variety of poems from the story, ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’  We learnt to rhyme and write our own clues for guessing the correct animal.  We also learnt about and retold and sequenced the Easter Story.

In Maths we learnt to order and compare numbers to 50, find one more and one less than a number and how to count in twos, fives and tens. We have been learning how to make fact families with addition and subtraction and compare and measure length and height and weight and mass.

In History, we found out about famous Queens and such as Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.  We learnt what Tudor life was like during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.  We also learnt how Queen Victoria lived and how she changed Britain for a better life.  We explored the life of Queen Elizabeth II and wrote her a letter to congratulate her on her Platinum Jubilee.

In Science, we gathered and presented data through our rainfall experiment.  We made rain gauges and used them to measure the amount of rainfall each day for one week.

In Design Technology, we used simple levers and pivots to make a moving mechanism for a mini-beast picture.  We practised skills in cutting, folding, fixing and joining.

We also enjoyed our Computing sessions.  We have become brilliant at Coding over the half term and learnt how to animate different scenes, using code and telling the computer to move objects in different directions.  We also learnt how to hide and move objects at the start or when clicked!

We also played lots of ball games during our PE lessons, practising how to throw, catch, defend and aim balls and bean bags at targets.   We finished off the term with an amazing trip to Woburn Safari Park and a fantastic Easter Craft Morning which we all thoroughly enjoyed!

In the Summer term, our topic will be Oh I Do Like To Be Seaside The Seaside!  In English we will be reading The Rainbow Fish, Tiddler and Granddad’s Island. In Art, we look forward to producing self-portraits, sculptures and paintings in the style of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

In Maths we will be learning about measures of weight and capacity. We use our skills of 2s, 5s and 10s to help us learn about multiplication and also about fractions by finding halves and quarters of a range of objects, shapes and numbers. Our RE lessons will teach us about the Muslim faith, what they believe and how they live.

We are really looking forward to another exciting time in Year 1!
