How to become a Governor

Governors generally serve for 4 years. There are different categories of governors, and they are appointed in different ways as outlined below:

1)      Parent Governors – there are two positions available in this category; when a vacancy occurs, any parent of existing pupils is eligible for nomination.  An election is held when nominations exceed vacancies.  The position is held for 4 years.

2)      Local Authority Governor – there is one position in this category. The LA either nominates or endorses the nomination of an individual to this position.

3)      Co-opted Governors – there are eight positions available in this category; the Full Governing Body appoints individuals to the board; when deciding on appointments the board takes into account what skills an individual can bring so that the board comprises a diverse mix of skills and experience.

4)      Associate Governors – the board can ask individuals with particular skills to attend some meetings to act in an advisory capacity.  Associate Governors can be given voting rights at committee level but do not have voting rights at Full Board level.
